Liverpool are closing in on Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum for a possible transfer move this summer.
The player is keen on the move to the club and is expected to travel to the Merseyside to finalise the deal.
The 25-year old Holland international is really interested in the move in light of the new status of Newcastle as a Championship club. The transfer deal is worth about £25 million and would be a good deal for Newcastle. Wijnaldum would have the opportunity of continuing in the English Premier League. Aside the Reds, Tottenham Hotspurs are keen on getting the player this summer as they reinforce ahead of the forthcoming campaign. However, the player is reported to likely move to Liverpool this summer as it stands as Spurs were put off instantly by the asking price.
The player came off the bench to score in the 6-0 win over Bohemian on Saturday. When asked about the transfer, Rafa Benitez said: “We maybe have to sell some players if we have the right offers, but that’s always normal.”
The club would be looking at £25 million for the player but it is not yet clear how much Liverpool would drop for the player but it would take up to £20 million to convince the Magpies to sell Wijnaldum this summer. Newcastle signed the player from PSV Eindoven in the last campaign for £14.5 million. He scored 11 goals in the season, ending the campaign as the club’s highest goal scorer.
On the other hand, Benitez is keen on signing a centre back and Blackburn’s Grant Hanley is the top choice for the position. In case the deal doesn’t go through, the club has other players on ground that they hope to capture ahead of the transfer deadline.
