Newcastle United attacking midfielder Miguel Almiron was one of the goalscorers as Paraguay beat Chile in a Group A encounter at the Copa America tournament on Brazilian soil. He was on target in the second half as Paraguay defeated the Chileans 2-0 to book their placein the quarterfinals.

Paraguay started the 2021 Copa America tournament with a 3-1 victory over Bolivia thanks to the brace from Angel Romero. Erwin Saavedra had given Bolivia a shock lead inside ten minutes and they held on to that lead until the 62nd minute when RomeroGamarra scored the equaliser. Romero then added two goals to win the game for Paraguay as he proved to be the difference between the two countries.
In their second game in Group A, Paraguay were beaten 1-0 by Argentina thanks to the goal from Guido Rodriguez. Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game on 13 minutes.
The win over Chile took the Paraguayans to second spot on the Group A standings ahead of the Chileans who dropped to third place as a result of the defeat.
